One Day National Seminar on NDE of Composite structures

DIGITAL RADIOGARPHY WORKING GROUP (INDIA)

Digital radiography (DR) has emerged as an acceptable technology in the recent past with the introduction of Flat Panel Detectors and economically viable electronics and imaging technologies. Some of the leading R&D centres have already initiated studies in this field and many industries are in the process of examining the details with a view to switch over to this technology. A full fledged Digital Radiography facility based on flat panel detector system was established at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in February 2004 itself. The demand for DR within the country is going to increase tremendously in the near future with the rapid industrial growth and competitiveness. A few R & D laboratories in the country have generated the necessary understanding and technical expertise to exploit the benefits of DR. However, this expertise is scattered at different locations in the country.

In the year 2005, ISNT Thiruvanathapuram Chapter proposed the formation of a Digital Radiography Working Group of ISNT, for disseminating the technical information about the use, applications and benefits of DR all over the country in order to make the members of ISNT in every region of the country DR aware and DR enabled.

PROPOSED ACTIVITIES OF DRWGI

  1. The body shall liaise with national and international specialists, laboratories and groups working in the field of DR and interact with manufacturers, suppliers, potential users, industries, R&D laboratories and educational institutions.
  2. The activities of the Working Group include evaluation of DR technology, assessment of advantages and limitations of systems, formulation of standards for digital radiology, generating technical know-how for better systems for future applications, etc.
  3. The DRWG shall bring out a periodical Newsletter to be distributed as a part of the Journal of NDE. All activities of the WG shall be focused through this Newsletter and the JNDE.
  4. The DRWG shall organize Technical Meets and Workshops on DR in collaboration with various Chapters of ISNT. The proceedings of such Technical Meets and Workshops will be published for the benefit of all concerned.
  5. The DRWG shall also organize Special Sessions on DR and demonstration of capabilities of DR during the annual National Seminars and Industrial Exhibitions of ISNT.

FUNCTIONING OF DRWGI

The DRWG of ISNT shall function with the full technical and logistic support of ISNT - Thiruvananthapuram Chapter. In addition, it would draw technical and logistic supports from all members, member bodies and organizations. Bulk of the communications will be made by email so as to reach all concerned speedily. The salient features and summery information on current issues and highlights of achievements will be posted in the ISNT's website for everybody's information and feedback.

FORMATION OF DRWGI

DRWGI was formed by NGC in 2006 with Thiruvananthapuram Chapter as the lead center for Digital Radiography activities in the country. Presently the working group has more than 100 members working in radiography, DR, CT and related NDT fields. A 23 member Executive Committee was also formed with Sri. B.C. Bhaumik as Chairman and Dr. V.R. Ravindran as Secretary. DRWG India was formally inaugurated by Dr. K. Mohandas, Director, SCTIMST on 26 August, 2006 at Hotel Mascot, Thiruvanathapuram.

MAJOR ACTIVITIES COMPLETED

A one day workshop on Digital Radiography was organized on 26 August, 2006 at Hotel Mascot, Thiruvanathapuram, as the inaugural programme, which was attended by about 100 delegates from various institutions in the country and abroad. Ec Meeting nad General Meeting were also held on the same day at Thiruvananthapuram.

The second meeting was held at Hyderabad during the national Seminar NDE2006. National Seminar on Imaging 2007 at IGCAR during April 26-28, 2007, and CT-2008 during Feb 15-17, 2008 at IIT Kanpur and Workshops on CR at GE Bangalore in June 2007 were some of the activities in which members of DRWGI were involved. Pre-Conference Tutorials on Digital Radiography were organized in the last 3 National Seminars NDE2005, NDE2006 and NDE2007. The latest programme was the one day workshop on DR Technology organized by ISNT, Kolkata Chapter and DRWGI at Kolkata on August 23, 2008.
